Can I have a Hot Tub installed in my property?

May 9, 2022

Of course you can! However, there are things to consider:

The electric supply for a hot tub indoors or outdoors must be installed by a fully qualified electrician.

The hot tub installation must conform to the current BS:7671 of the electrical wiring regulations and all works must be certificated to part P of the building regulations of electrical requirements.

In the UK, a lot of, if not all domestic hot tubs are designed for 230v single phase AC supply.

Finding out what power supply your Hot Tub needs

The hot tub electrics specification will have the required information for us to calculate the total load that it will need to operate safely. We have the ability to work out what size of cabling that is needed. Even the smallest of hot tubs would normally require a minimum of a 13 amp supply. Larger hot tubs generally require a bigger feed like a 32 amp power supply both supplies will have to have RCD protection fitted.

If it must have its own dedicated power supply we will ensure:

  • The correct MCB or RCBO rating,
  • The correct size cable,
  • The protection fitted to comply with current electrical safety standards.
  • The small inflatable usually only needs a 13 amp plug socket but still, you’re better off getting this checked by an electrician, and also make sure if it’s connected outside to have a proper outdoor weather proof socket or weather proof fuse connection unit (FCU), and the job will be described
  • Supply, install & connect electrical point including wiring & connections
  • 1x spur
  • 1x weather proof socket

The cost may vary but it will start from £275.00, and it will depend if it is a load take off a socket or it is an independent circuit.

In case your hot tub requires a 32A RCD protected supply before we can install and commission your spa.

A qualified electrician must install the electric supply. You will require:

  • A 32A breaker installing in your consumer unit.
  • A 6mm armoured cable running from the consumer unit to an external isolator.
  • IP 65 rated rotary isolator fixed minimum 2 metres away from the unit.

EMS ELECTRICAL will provide a waterproof outside rotary isolator switch around 2 metres away from the Hot Tub so that the power supply can be isolated quickly and effectively for emergency or maintenance.

We also leave a coil of cable beside the Hot Tub base so that we have enough length to wire it in whichever position you choose to site it.

Mechanical protection for outside electrical installations

ALL 230V outside electrical installations need to have mechanical protection, this is either in the form of SWA (steel wire armoured cable) or appropriate metal conduit.
